From February until May 2013, Torch Club members have been researching, watching videos, and planning ways to tackle hunger in locally. Many of the members at the Rogers Unit of the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County have themselves struggled with food insecurity. Members decided to use a grant given to them by the nonprofit KABOOM to make raised garden beds. They also raised money through a concession stand to buy seeds to plant the vegetable garden. The garden teaches members how to provide renewable food sources for themselves and gives families fresh produce for free! During their research, members found that an obstacle food insecure families often face is fresh fruits and vegetables are too expensive for them to purchase. Torch Club is a service learning character and leadership program.
