You may remember last year when the Boys & Girls Club of Benton County received a grant from the Illinois River Watershed Project to build a rain garden at the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit. It was a gift that keeps on giving. On Thursday, June 19th, the McKinney Unit Learning Center was lucky enough to have a visit from Lauren Rey who works with the Illinois River Watershed. Ms. Rey gave three hands-on presentations explaining how the watershed works as well as how to take care of it. She began each session with an interactive game explaining to the kids the importance of water on Earth. The kids absolutely loved watching Ms.Rey sprinkle “pollution” on a town replica as they gave her examples of how neighborhoods, construction sites, farms, and more create pollution. At the end, the kids were excited to take what they learned about the Illinois River watershed and try to reduce pollution in their daily lives to better protect the watershed.
