The Rogers Unit kids had a great time doing a chemistry STEM Activity – “Elephant Toothpaste”. In the activity the kids mixed hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and food coloring. In a separate container they mixed yeast and water. When they poured the two mixtures together, the yeast acted as a catalyst in the hydrogen peroxide by rapidly absorbing the oxygen in the peroxide. This rapid reaction caused the mixture to create a lot of foam very quickly, spewing out of the container, looking like toothpaste.
