The Rogers Unit kids took part in a STEAM activity demonstrating how rubber bands can be used to cause a watermelon to explode. Students placed rubber bands around a watermelon, 10 rubber bands at a time. Prior to starting the experiment, kids were asked to hypothesize if the watermelon would actually explode, and how many rubber bands it would take. Guesses ranged from 50 to 1,000. It actually took approximately 500 to split the watermelon and cause the top half to explode.
