The Boys & Girls Club of Benton County has three active Torch Clubs in Bentonville, Bella Vista & Rogers. Torch Club are service learning and leadership clubs for youth ages 11-13. The Torch Club just completed a very special PAWS (Protecting Animals with Service) project to raise resources for the Bella Vista Animal Shelter and to raise awareness of the importance of vaccination & vet’ care, grooming, discipline and training, and nutrition & exercise.
To raise awareness the Club organized the 1st Annual Dog Fall Festival. 91 participants attended the three hour event that raised $97 for the shelter and food donations in addition to the 100 food treat packs donated by the Club. Psychologist Dr. Diana Nagel (pictured bottom right), from The Canine Connection in Fayetteville, put on an obedience expo with her dog Jacks and answered questions about obedience training, while Mercy Hospital Nutrition Manager, Randy Golden, made and served homemade hot cocoa and hot apple cider to those attending.
At the event Torch Club members:
- Passed-out homemade dog treats and laminated dog treat recipe cards to pet owners
- Researched and created laminated refrigerator brochures with information about nutrition, grooming, exercise, and vet care to pass-out to event participants
- Made and raffled off 3 “PAWS” Dog Blankets
- Made and distributed pet bandanas for each attending dog
