The Dove Self-Esteem Workshop was held September 19th at the Carl & Alleen McKinney Unit. Girls learned about social media and how unrealistic standards for beauty are set in the media. The workshop kicked off with an impromptu dance on the stage with about 20 girls confidently dancing to Taylor Swift’s song “Shake It Off”. Dove Self Esteem national spokesperson Jess Weiner lead the girls through exercises on what influences their self esteem; both good and bad. The more than 60 girls attending came to the realization that how women and girls are depicted in magazines isn’t how they actually appear in real life. In an exercise, girls created a “Pinterest” page of their circle of influence on their esteem. From it they realized who influences them and who they can inspire. A nutritious & delicious lunch was provided by Chick-fil-A in Rogers, AR. A video was made of this workshop and it will be edited and available to young girls for future downloads of the Dove Self Esteem workshop. There will be downloadable resources for educators & facilitators to use this curriculum across platforms all over the world.
