Ethan Roy has been a club member with the club for seven years. Ethan was one of those troubled youth who routinely was involved with some type of altercation. At one point in time, Ethan was even suspended for an entire summer from the Bella Vista Unit. Fast forward several years and we can see a vast transformation. It all began when Ethan became heavily involved with the Keystone Club character & leadership program at the HLM Teen Center. At that point in time, significant behavior changes could be noticed. Involvement in the Keystone Club was helping Ethan set and achieve positive life goals.
One day late lat spring, Ethan approached the Unit Director about becoming involved with the newly created Bella Vista Keystone Club and expressed interest in becoming a staff member. At only sixteen he would not be eligible to serve in the Jr. Staff Program for another six months. Ethan wasn’t daunted, he became instrumental in the formation of Bella Vista’s Keystone Club and was rewarded for his long hours and exemplary effort with being given more responsibility at the Bella Vista Unit. At this point in time, all his work was voluntary and credited to the required service hours in the Keystone Club.
After Ethan turned seventeen, in recognition for his hard work, he reached his goal of being chosen for the Jr. Staff Program. Once the troubled club member, Ethan was now the mentor striving to enable and inspire other youth to reach their full potential. Ethan has surpassed his service hours goal and was elected by his peers President of the new Bella Vista Keystone Club. As importantly, he has surpassed his academic goal of attaining a 3.0 GPA. With staff and program support, he is now achieving his weight loss goals and moving towards living a healthier lifestyle.
This young man will be applying for Boys & Girls Club of Benton County 2015-2016 Youth of the Year. Ethan is achieving what we try to accomplish everyday at the club – healthy lifestyles, academic success, and making positive life choices. He is now wearing the blue staff shirt of a Jr. Staff member and has shown tremendous growth and development, but is still setting goals towards a great future.
